Week 5 Reflection: New Era
This is the week that we get into the modern day of thinking here in the US. This "new era" described as the Progressive Era. The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States that spanned the 1890s to the 1920s. The main objectives of the Progressive movement were addressing problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and political corruption. This is where Uncle Sam was created in this Era adding income tax and tariff tax into America. It started in Texas around the late 1800s, and we have been under the saying "death by taxes" ever since.
This was also an Era for the immigrants coming from overall different places including Mexico, Ireland, and other foreign countries overseas. An immigrant is a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country. Most immigrants at the time were coming to America trying to better religious values and to have a better life. As they did not know just like every other altercation in America, the immigrants were playing the race game with America at jobs, and even to become a citizen. Then some immigrants were brought in, and they were being used to build up America. For example, Chinese immigrants were brought in to help build the railroads in the east and west and help build major cities. Something behind that though is that there were negative propaganda post about the Chinese, and this eventually led to a ban on Chinese immigration. But others like including the Japanese eventually came over as well.
Just like any other situation in America, Americans and whites will give opportunities to people and then take them away. If somebody has created something or is working harder then the next person, and somebody using their "whiteness" or in the government will try and destroy it.

Good information about the immigrants. It's crazy because nowadays it's going on today. I feel bad for the other races that is denied because of the color of the skin and because of the discrimination.
ReplyDeleteHey Braxton! Nice post! I like the picture you chose for this post, it really emphasizes how immigrants built this country. It is disheartening to see these people come to America for a better life and better opportunities, then have them stripped away from them. I can’t believe they banned an entire nation of people from immigrating just because they felt economically threaten by them.
ReplyDeleteWassup Braxton, I enjoyed reading your post. I feel immigration or races still plays a big part in todays life that we live in. I don't think its right to stop or miss treat a person because there trying to better they self in life especially over the color of your skin. I feel as the person with the higher power few the "Immigrant's" or could possible see them becoming a higher power that's why the miss treat them .
ReplyDeleteWassup Braxton,
ReplyDeleteNiceeee post o your reflection about the Progression Era. you gave a lot of information and very well detailed information. Immigration still and will always be a big issue in our society and how it has taken over the US. Most immigrants are trying to come to start a better life for their families and themselves but due to US circumstances and it don't really apply or matter to the immigrants.. Keep up the good work !!
Wassup Braxton, I liked reading your post. I know immigration still plays a big part in todays life that we live in. I Hate the fact we treat a person bad because there trying to get a better life just because they are a POC. I feel as the person who is the opportunity holder treat them bad because the immigrants can’t do anything about it.
ReplyDeleteHello again Braxton! I like your post! The picture you chose for this post truly encapsulates how migrants were instrumental in the establishment of our country. I felt that it was unfair for people who wanted to move to this country for a fresh start to be denied the opportunity because the "threats" they could possibly oppose. Once again, this was a very good read and I will enjoy reading your future posts!
